A new venture in board game publishing has provided unexpected income and satisfaction for its creator, emphasizing the balance of work and personal fulfillment.

Entering a New Arena: The Board Game Industry

Engagement in income-generating activities can bring fulfillment, regardless of one’s life stage. This sentiment rings particularly true as individuals seek diverse avenues to maintain financial health and personal satisfaction. A recent venture into the board game publishing industry illustrates this principle, showcasing the potential benefits of atypical income streams.
A close associate recently reached out, presenting an opportunity to assist in projects for his new role as Director of Marketing at a board game publishing company. Although the gaming world was largely uncharted territory—other than the widely recognized Monopoly—I decided to dive in. The experience has been remarkably enjoyable, both financially and creatively. The added income has been a welcome boost, illustrating how even a moderate financial uptick can enhance one’s quality of life.
Defining Productive Engagement
This endeavor has unveiled a unique sense of productivity that differentiates itself from traditional full-time positions or even part-time jobs. It occupies a middle ground—less burdened than the rigors of a traditional 9-to-5, yet rewarding in its own way. The role does not carry the financial stakes of a full-time commitment or the altruistic rewards associated with volunteering or parenting, which also rarely provide financial compensation. Instead, this opportunity balances enjoyment, financial gain, and professional engagement, seamlessly fitting into a lifestyle that values personal fulfillment.

The job aligns perfectly with what I’ve termed the Triad of Hustling: Time, Money, and Fun. For projects to be worthwhile, they ideally meet at least two of these criteria. If just one is favorable, it’s typically not worth pursuing. However, this board game venture ticks all three boxes. Requiring only 5-10 hours per week, it offers significant enjoyment along with a reasonable compensation structure. Most importantly, it allows for flexible participation, empowering me to engage at my own pace.
Building Community and Learning
One of the unexpected joys has been the chance to learn about a vibrant community within the gaming industry, comparable in enthusiasm to personal finance circles. Numerous influencers—spanning YouTube, TikTok, podcasts, and blogs—are dedicated to fostering engagement and excitement within the gaming space. The open and welcoming nature of this community stands out, demonstrating how different sectors can share the common goal of education and enthusiasm.
In addition to the communal aspects, fair compensation adds another layer of comfort regarding financial decision-making. The additional income provides a cushion against unexpected expenses, such as car repairs or medical bills. Having recently faced significant healthcare costs, including $20,000 infusions for a chronic condition, the secondary income offers a safety net in navigating any financial surprises that life may throw. Fortunately, insurance mitigates a significant portion of these costs, but the unpredictability of healthcare expenses remains a considerable factor in financial planning.

Preparing for the Unexpected
While I had anticipated several benefits from entering the board game world, I’ve also needed to remain flexible and adaptable. Over the course of this new role, I’ve had to reconcile the unexpected with my established financial framework. Fortunately, my wife’s income provides stability, allowing us to subscribe to what I term “WifeFI”—a strategy where living expenses are primarily supported by her earnings, while I explore less conventional income-generating opportunities.
Ultimately, this unexpected role in board game publishing has underscored the importance of staying open to new experiences and avenues for income. The dynamism of this industry and its communities reveals endless opportunities for personal and professional growth. Engaging with such passion projects can be immensely liberating, promoting both mental and financial health.
As the journey continues, it will be fascinating to see what emerges next. Unexpected opportunities often lead to enriching chapters in life, fully reminding me that one must keep an eye on possibilities as they unfold. The future may hold other surprises—whether they come in the form of different roles or unique experiences within thriving communities.
Final Thoughts
This experience leaves me intrigued about the broader potential of unconventional work engagements. Staying engaged in sectors that spark interest can offer both personal satisfaction and financial reward. Whether it leads to attending related industry conferences or simply deepening skills and knowledge, the journey reminds me that a diverse approach to income can be fulfilling in myriad ways.
In navigating life’s various challenges and rewards, it's evident there’s much to explore from unexpected opportunities. Embracing these new roles adds a layer of richness to my life, illustrating how varied experiences shape not just financial landscapes but personal fulfillment as well.
